About Me…

Hello, and thanks for taking the time to visit my photography website.

My name is James (Jimmy). Born in Sydney where I spent my early years before relocating to Wollongong at the start of middle school, then on to Grafton during my senior school years. I had my first taste of military life whilst finishing senior school - where I joined the Australian Army Reserves, 41st Royal NSW Regiment as an infantry solider. My dad was a Vietnam War veteran, an infantry soldier with 5RAR and 8RAR during the latter years of the war - so it only seemed right to follow in his footsteps with at least some military service.

After high school, I spent several years traveling Australia and trying my hand at a variety of jobs before enlisting full-time in the Royal Australian Army’s Signals Corps. The military led to postings in Melbourne, Sydney, Townsville, and Darwin, and overseas deployments to East Timor, Iraq, and Afghanistan. I reached the rank of Sergeant, and self-discharged from the military after more than a decade of service.

Now based in Brisbane with my wife of 20+yrs. I work as a Technical Officer at a high school - not the best paying gig in the world but I enjoy helping the young people with the technology they need to flourish during their education.

Travel

Travel is a big part of my life - I am happiest when I am partially lost and exploring a new city, people, food, and culture. I aim for at least one overseas trip and one Australian adventure each year, with plenty of camping and mini getaways squeezed in wherever possible. I would like to visit as many parts of the world as possible before my time is up.

Photography

I first got into photography around 2005 with the Olympus Micro Four Thirds system, which served me well for many years — particularly thanks to its compact size, which made it perfect for travel and outdoor adventures. While it was tough to part with that system, I’ve recently transitioned to the Sony Alpha full-frame lineup.

I’m now exploring the best lens combinations for the Sony System to match my style, especially when it comes to balancing quality with packability for travel, but also able to produce high quality people and pet images.

Looking Ahead

In the past my photography has mostly focused on wildlife, landscapes, and travel —and that will always be a passion. However, in 2025 I am shifting more attention toward capturing people and pets, aiming to bring a more personal, human element into my work.

Please do not hesitate to reach out via email, or social media if you would like to work with me on a photography project, purchase a print, or just to say hello..

Photography for me is what I imagine meditation is for the Tibetan Monks - it’s that time when all my attention is focused on the scene in front of me and everything else is set aside for another time.
